The estimated rate shown for each karat applies only if the item tests at or above the listed minimum gold purity: 10K must test at least 41.7% gold; 14K must test at least 58.5%; 18K must test at least 75.0%; 21K must test at least 87.5%; 22K must test at least 91.6%; and 24K must test at least 99.9% must be in form of a bar or other bullion item.  A hallmark or karat stamp does not guarantee actual purity.
