How Can I Identify Sterling Silver?

Genuine sterling silver is commonly marked with:

• Recognized British sterling-silver hallmarks

• Other recognized marks representing 92.5% silver

A sterling mark does not guarantee authenticity, and not every silver-colored item is sterling silver.

The following markings generally indicate that an item is plated or is not solid sterling silver:

• SILVERPLATED

• EP

• EPNS

• ELECTROPLATE

• NICKEL SILVER

• GERMAN SILVER

• STAINLESS or STAINLESS STEEL

Silver-plated items contain only a thin surface layer of silver and generally do not contain enough recoverable silver to qualify as sterling.
